Twas the Night before Fly In

Twas the night Before Fly In
A few pilots were there
Like Dana, Stan, and I think Scott Adair.

The grass was mowed nice, pilots up in the air
With hopes that the next day would bring more pilots there

And yet you think back to a year in review,
Of all of those flights, of a mishap or two...

Like...
Stan and Dave on the runway, getting ready to go…
Loren telling them no, but Brenden thought he said “slow”

So they both zipped by as I was waving with my fist
And said “You better stop now before Loren gets pissed”

And I remember last seeing Jim, with his glasses scratched and lower lip swollen
Do you think he’d be better off, if he just stuck to bowling?

Karen took to the air once, sometimes flying is tough
Ziggy did the same thing, sometimes once is enough?

And once is enough if you ask Dana, I think
He’ll say “once is enough” if you go in the drink

I remember when he went in, from the sky he was falling
I knew it was a matter of time before Loren would be calling

And then Loren Called, “Dana went in” I replied
I couldn’t make this sound good no matter how hard I tried

Now how high was he flying, it’s kind of hard to say
But it wasn’t high enough to keep him from landing in the bay

He went over Cedar Island and then came down with a bound
Why is it when you need the coast guard there never around

“I’d rather be lucky than good” tis what most pilots say
But I’m not sure that Dana was either that day

Well speaking of luck, remember Gordon’s inflation
When the wing came up, he was all over creation

It was a go or abort, so he said “what the heck”
Then he added full power as we all hit the deck

Now he would have gone straight if only he were able
With his legs hanging down almost hitting the table

As he headed right for us, he had a wide look to his eye,
It’s the kind of look you get; when you think you’re gonna die

But I had problems of my own, not a time to be harsh
Standing knee deep in mud in the middle of the marsh

As I was heading back to the airport, my engine just quit
And as I slowly descended down, I could only say “Crap”

And then Brendan, his eyes twinkled, with a little mischievous grin,
Who’ll forget that night that he almost went in

He was flying around, got real close to the shack,
I think he forgot Sheila was riding in back

But before he landed, I could feel my heart sinking
As I said to myself “What the Hell was he thinking”

But what bothered him most, was not that he almost bought the store
What bothered him most was he couldn’t bust Dana no more

And Test Pilot Stan stuns us with his unique style of flying
He makes it look easy, like he’s not even trying

I don’t even think he’s afraid if he falls
Cause he’s got a lot of nerve, He’s got a lot of bravery….

Now To fly like he does takes a great deal of nerve
Any bets on how long before he throws the reserve

But we all feel so fortunate, to be able to fly
To strap on our motors and take to the sky

We all share a deep love, and it’s a love for the air
It’s a real special place when you’re flying up there

And so now we say MERRY CHRISTMAS and a Happy New Year
To all the people and memories, that we’ll forever hold dear

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
